THE AWKWARD KOOPA
Chapter 1-An Awkward Beginning
“What do you mean sold out?! You can’t be!” said a stripe-shelled Koopa to the store manager. He was yelling to the store owner in the village of Petalburg. “I’m sorry sir, but like I said, we have no more! Mario bought all of the Courage Shells! He said he needed five of them for a troubled toad or something, and he had the money, and we only had five in stock!” the manager said to the stripe-shelled Koopa. “I’m sorry sir, but we don’t have any more! Maybe, perhaps you could instead buy something else, like a mushroom or honey syrup?” The Koopa raises his arm, but hesitates. He lowers it back down again. “I’m sorry, I just really needed those Courage Shells…” The manager recovers from this outburst, and calmly asks “so, if you don’t mind me asking, why did you need them so badly?” The Koopa looks up at the toad, and lowers his head again, sighing. “Well, you see-“ “HEY!!!” “Oh no…” the Koopa whispers. “WHERE ARE YOU?! MOM WANTS YOU RIGHT NOW!!!” “Coming Sis! Sorry, but I REALLY gotta go. If she sent out my sister to fetch me, then I’m either in big trouble, or something went wrong.” “I can understand that sir.” “Good. Thanks man.” He opens the shop door, and hesitates a moment. “By the way…” The manager looks over to him. “Yes?” “…I apologize for yelling earlier….” He leaves the shop, thus leaving the shop manager to chuckle to himself. “That Koopa, he can be so silly sometimes…” Back outside, with the Koopa… “HEY SIS! YOU CALLED ME?” he yells. “There you are!” A little girl Koopa comes out from behind a nearby bush. “I was looking for some Turtley Leaves to make you some tea. What took you so long? Mom has been worried sick!” “Well, I had some business to take care of. It hasn’t been resolved yet though…” The little sister just looks at him. “What does resolved mean?” The Koopa looks down to his sister, and kneels down to be at eye-level. She’s only about half the height of him, and he’s one of the taller koopa’s in the village. He gets it from his mother’s side. “You see Koopette, resolved means to be solved. You know, finished.” “Oooohhhh…OK!” she happily yells. The Koopa flinches from the yell. It’s obvious he wasn’t expecting it. “Jeez! Can you yell any louder?” YES I CAN BROTHER!!!” she screams. The poor guy had to cover his ears from this. “I can see that, you can be a LOT louder!” The girl Koopa giggles and skips on ahead of the Koopa, heading down the path. “Hurry up brother, or mommy will be very upseeet!” she says sing-songy. The Koopa can’t help but to giggle at his younger sister. Later, at Koopette’s home… “Hey mom, ya wanted me?” “Yes hun! I’m in the kitchen!” The Koopa walks into a gorgeous home, filled with fancy dishes, polished shells, even a statue of the koopa’s father, who was a great hero of the village. The Koopa statue had some distinguishing features. Like a left eye that was always seemingly half closed, a band-aid over one cheek, and he was wearing a sweater underneath his shell, which was cracked slightly at the bottom. The plaque below the statue said “Koops: Hero of Petalburg; Co-slayer of Hooktail; father of two.” The koopa stared at the statue. He found that he could get sucked into his own imagination just by looking at this one statue. He could daydream for hours on end about having adventures like his father Koops did. “Hey boy, you hear me?” The koopa shakes his head. “Huh-wha? What?” “I said, did you hear me?” “No dad, I didn’t. What did you want?” “I said for you to come here so I could tell you something!” “Oh. Right.” The koopa walks over to the den of the house, which was filled up with trophies from his father’s adventure with Mario. There was Hooktail’s tail, her brother Gloomtail’s tail, and even his older brother’s tail. The tail of Bonetail. THE Bonetail! But Koop’s personal favorite treasure, was his most recent one. He went back to Hooktail Castle one day after splitting up with Mario at the docks of Rougeport, and he noticed something was amiss. He investigated the castle, and found the shell of an egg! A bright white egg with blue spots! It already hatched though. Koops, however, decided to keep the eggs remains as a decorative piece. And it remains in his den to this day. After 20 long years. “Yes dad? What did you want?” “Son,” he started, “I think it’s about time I took you out and showed you the ropes. It’s time you learned to fight!” “And I have already disagreed with that!” Said the mother of the two koopa kids. She came over to the doorway to the kitchen. She was slightly taller than Koops, and was wearing a white apron that said “Koopie-Koo” on it. “THAT’S why I had your sister bring you home. It’s your decision son, not ours.” “Of course I want to mom! OF COURSE! Why would I not want to?” “He does have a point dear.” “Now don’t you start it! Just ‘cause you’re the mayor of Petalburg, that don’t mean you can do whatever you want!” “I know dear. This would be the 10th time you told me that today.” “Well it’s true! And furthermore, I don’t want my dear son learning how to fight! You were stubborn enough 20 years ago, and I don’t need my own son being that way!” Koops stands up and walks into the kitchen. The kitchen is blue and white trimmed style from ceiling to floor. There is a single ceiling fan turned on low, with four lights in it, which are on and illuminating the kitchen in a warm cozy light. “Now dear, we agreed on this when we got married, that I would teach my son to fight and to defend himself, and you would get to teach our daughter how to be the boss of the house!” He puts emphasis on ‘boss of the house’ just enough to recognize the slight anger in his voice. “Yes, but I take it back, here and now.” “But you can’t do that! You’ve already done your part, and besides, I’ve already…” While the fight continues, the Koopa heads outside to just ignore his parents fighting. His sister comes out a few long minutes later. “Hey, Big brother.” He looks up to her. “Yeah?” “Why did you need those Courage Shells anyway?” The Koopa instantly straightens. “Uh, for safety reasons. That’s why.” He grins slightly. She smiles. “I know you better than that. What were you REALLY buying them for?” He gulps. “Well, you see…um…” “Yes?” She leans in really close. He gulps again. “Promise not to tell mom?” She nods. He sighs in relief. “Thanks. Okay, now you see, I need those Courage Shells to boost up my defense a little bit. That way, I will be tougher in a fight. You see, in the RDM issue this week, it said that there were some unconfirmed reports of ghosts on the Excess Express. I wanted to check it out, but I needed those Courage Shells to boost up my defense first. That’s why.” “But you can’t even get on that train without a ticket, and those are near impossible to get!” He nods. “Yeah, but dad has one, remember?” His sister nods. “Yeah, I know, but I don’t think-“ “I have always been favored in strength by dad, right? So, if I go out on an adventure, he might give me the ticket! Simple as that! And if not, then I can always go see Frankie Pianta of the Rougeport syndicate and see how I could get one! See?” His sister nods. “Yeah, that may work!” “Then it’s settled! I’m going to go ask him right now!” He gets up, turns around, and walks back into the house. His sister gets up, and shakes her head. “Silly brother…”
Meanwhile, back inside…
The koopa walks into the kitchen. His parents are still fighting. “Hey…” he says. They continue fighting. “…hey, dad?” Still fighting. “Dad?!” Didn’t hear him. “DAD?!” Nope, still nothing. “…DAAAAAD!!!” “WHAT?! Oh! Sorry son, what is it?” He shoots a sharp glance at his wife, who “humphs” at him. She turns her head to avoid his gaze. “Well, I was wondering-“ “If I would teach you how to fight? Great idea son! Let’s-“ “No dad, listen to me.” He interrupts. Koops quiets down, and goes to sit in his chair in the den. The koopa grunts while crouching to sit down. “Man, these old bones are starting to take a toll on me. Now, come in here son, and tell me what it is you wanted to tell me.” He walks in, and looks back at his mom. She is eavesdropping on the two of them from behind a corner. “AH-HEM! Mom?” “……………..” “Dear, we know you are there.” Says Koops. “……..alright. I’ll go make dinner then.” The two Koopas wait a few seconds. “Mom, I know you’re still there, I never heard footsteps.” Footsteps are heard as she returns to the kitchen. “Anyway, dad, I was wondering…” His father listens intently. “Could I borrow your train ticket?” “………” “Is that a no?” “Yes. You may borrow it, but on one condition. You tell me why.” The koopa stiffens slightly, and gulps. “IwantedtogoontotheExcessExpresstoseeiftherereallywereghosts! That’s why…” he says extremely quickly. “Wanna see if there are ghosts on that train eh?” He gulps again. “Uh…yeah…” “……..alright. But I’m going with you. I know which cabin he is locat-“ “No dad, I’m sorry, but I want to do this alone.” His dad gasps in shock. “WHAT?! But-but-but-“ “But nothing dad. I’m going alone, and that’s that. I’m sorry, but I really want to go alone.” “……I understand son. Here.” He hands him an orange and red-orange striped ticket. “It’s the train pass. Enjoy your ride! Heh-heh…” The koopa son accepts the pass, and notices the expression on his father’s face. “Look, dad-“ “No need son. Just, go out there, and give it your all! Make me proud!” The koopa kid nods and turns toward the door. “Wait a minute son!” He stops just at the door, and turns around to face his dad, who walks up to him and hands him a pendant necklace. The pendant is of a Golden Fuzzy resting in a jungle. It’s only about the size of a quarter. “What’s this?” His dad clears his throat. “Honestly, I don’t know. I found it on Keelhaul Key when I was with Mario. 20 years ago. I’ve had it ever since. It’s brought me some good luck. Without it, I wouldn’t have ever been able to propose to your mother. Treasure it well, alright?” He looks at his father’s necklace, and back to his father, who has a tear in his left eye. “Don’t worry dad, I will” he says while starting to tear up himself. He starts to head out the door, but then his father stops him again. “Before you head out, you may want to change the name you go by. You know, if the enemies you face find out you’re my son, they might kidnap or even try to kill you. Especially the Shadow Sirens. I hear they haven’t been doing ‘nice’ like Beldam said they would be. Be careful out there. Now, about your ‘adventurer’ name? What’s it gonna be?” The koopa kid thinks it over. “…How about…” “Yes?” “………I got it! How does ‘Koopa the Kid’ sound?” Koops shakes his head. “I don’t think so…besides, that one is already taken.” “Dang! Alright, how about,’Koopinator’?” “Nope. Also taken. He’s a fighter at the Glitz Pit.” “Oh man…” “Try again son…I know you can think of something good, you are my son after all!” He chuckles. “Yeah, I know. Let’s see…” His father sits down on the steps to the house, waiting. “…Okay, how about ‘Keenan’?” “A bit odd for a name, but it fits, I suppose…” He thinks it over. “Well, as long as it keeps you hidden from my enemies, I guess it’ll work! Alright, you are ready! Unless you think you may need some supplies.” “Uh, gee, yeah, I think so. Whacha think?!” Keenan says. “Well, here are 100 coins to use at the shops up ahead. I recommend starting at the shop here in town.” He hands a bag of 100 coins over to Keenan. “Wow! Thanks dad! I will spend them all wisely. And maybe a little bit impulsively, but that’ll be for later…” His father shoots a look of warning. “Oh, I’m joking!” “Uh-huh. Sure. Well, maybe you should get going before your mother wakes up from that fainting spell, eh?” “She fainted?! What from?” “She overheard us talking about you leaving. Didn’t you hear that thump?” “Yeah, but I though that was just Koopette playing or something…” “Nope. It was your mother fainting. Maybe you should get going? Like, NOW!?” “Right!” Keenan grabs the bag of money, and runs towards the shop. His father stays sitting on the steps. “Good luck son, good luck.” He whispers to himself.

Chapter 2-The Excess Express
Keenan has just gotten a bag of money from his father. He managed to grab his backpack earlier when he returned home by sneaking through the window. He reaches the shop and opens the door, dinging the bell attached. “Welcome to the Petalburg shop! How may I…oh. It’s just you.” The manager says to Keenan the Koopa. “Yeah, it’s me. Call me Keenan by the way. It’s my name I use while I’m out adventuring! For security and safety reasons of course.” The manager has an expression on his face, which seems to be screaming “YOU GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!!!” while also saying “Riiiiiiiightt…” Then he actually says, “Ooooooookay, whatever you say. Now, why are you here?” “I’m here for your goods.” “YOU’LL NEVER GET MY GOODS!!!” Keenan jumps back in shock. “Why not?! I think a Mushroom or three and a few honey syrups wouldn’t have that much worth to you!” The manager looks at Keenan. “What? You mean you’re here to shop? Oh…Never mind what I just said then…heh-heh-heh…” “But-“ “SO! You said you needed some Mushrooms and H. Syrups?” Keenan seems to give up on the subject of the “goods”. “Yeah, I did. Uh…give me three mushrooms and 3 H. Syrups. A couple of POW Blocks too please.” “Sure thing, ‘Keenan’” he says. He goes over to the nearby shelf, packed to the brims with different items ranging from Mushrooms to POW Blocks, and he gets down three Mushrooms, four H. Syrups, and two POW Blocks. “Alright, that’ll be a total of 43 coins. Is that acceptable sir?” “Yeah, it is.” He hands him the coins. The manager looks back at the Koopa in shock. “But, sir, you gave me 50 coins. I can’t accept this extra money!” Keenan simply chuckles. “You don’t get it yet, do you? The extra coins are for you! It’s a tip.” “Oh! Well, thank you sir!” “No problem. Now, I must be going, I don’t want to miss my train!” Keenan laughs. The manager, smiling, watches him leave his shop. He looks at his extra coins, then back to the door. He chuckles.
Meanwhile, outside…
“Alrighty then! I guess I’m set!” Keenan has gotten all he thinks he will need, and is heading out the gate of Petalburg. He has taken his first step outside the village. This is the farthest he has ever- “BIG BROTHER!!!” Keenan stops in his tracks, and looks back. Koopette is running up toward him. She is gasping for air. “Big…brother…wait…up…” “Alright, alright. What is it Koopette?” “Here…you almost…forgot this…” She hands him a Life Shroom. “What?! How-when-what-“ “I have a garden out back, remember? I have been growing all different kinds of Mushrooms and other herbs and things for years now! I thought you could use this one in particular. It’s really hard to grow just right you know. It took me at least 3 tries to get this one right!” Keenan tears up slightly, then he shakes it off. “Thank you, Koopette. Thank you very much.” “No problem big brother! Your welcome!” “Well, I guess I’ll be going now” he says, but is only turning towards the gate. He looks at Koopette, then back at home, where Koops is still sitting on the front porch steps, and then to pass the gate. “Well, you gonna go or not?” says his sister. “I will! Don’t rush me! I’m going…” he gulps. “Sooner or later…” He starts to take a step, and is then pushed through the gate by Koopette. He stumbles a few steps, and then looks back at Koopette, who’s giggling. “Bye! And good luck!” She shuts the gate. “Well, I guess I’m finally going then, but am I ready for it? I’m just not so sure…” he thinks. Then, he starts walking down the path. He starts walking a little faster, and eventually he goes into a jog. “Wow! This isn’t so bad after all!” he thinks to himself. He continues to jog down the path and across the bridge, until he bumps into someone. “Oh gosh I’m sorry!” He looks up and notices a pink Goomba, a normal looking Goomba with a blue cap, and a light brown Goomba inbetween them. “Watch where you’re going, will ya?” Says the one with the cap. “Now, Goombario, no need to get all worked up. I’m sure it was just an accident.” She leans in close to Keenan. “RIGHT, SIR?!” she yells. “I said I was sorry, didn’t I? What else do I have to…wait. Aren’t you…Goombella?” “How do you know my name?” the pink Goomba asks him. “My dad told me it. He told me of his adventure where he helped to defeat the Shadow Queen and rescued Princess Peach along with Mario! He said a pink Goomba was along with the group, and her name was Goombella! And that’s you, right?” Goombella seems shocked. “Wait, then you must be Koops’ kid, right? The mayor of Petalburg Koops? Married to Koopie-Koo?” “Yeah! I’m their kid! I’m Keenan, nice to meet ya!” Goombario waddles up to Goombella. He whispers to her, “You sure this guy’s alright? We do have our kid to be worried about you know…” “Don’t worry Goombario sweetie, she’ll be fine. If this kid really is the offspring of Koops, then we have nothing to worry about! Trust me!” “Oh, alright. But one thing goes wrong, or one hint of it, and I’ll kick him to the curb! Understand me?” “Yeah I do. But shouldn’t you say that to Keenan instead?” Goombario’s face goes to a shade of blushing. “Right.” “So, what’s wrong?” Keenan asks. “Nothing is wrong, just me being worried for my kid. You understand, right?” “Yeah, unfortunately I do. My mother is EXTREMELY overprotective. I think you know how that is, right?” Goombario quickly glances over to Goombella, who is inspecting the ruins that lead to Hooktail caslte. “Actually,” “Think what you say Goombario. Think carefully.” “She has good hearing, huh? But my mother was a little protective, so yeah, I know it.” “Anyway, what are you guys doing out here in the first place?” Goombario gestures over to Goombella, and says “We were told or rather, informed, about an ancient mythical or legendary treasure in Hooktail castle. That’s why we’re here. My wife loves things like this, and so does little Goomberella here.” He gestures over to the little light brown Goomba, who giggles. Keenan approaches the little Goomba. “She sure is cute!” “Thank you!” she says. “She can talk at her young age?” “I’m only 4 years old you know.” Says Goomberella. Goombario waddles over to Keenan. “Me and her mom both have a high I.Q. so it’s kinda obvious hers would be high as well.” Keenan looks at both parents, then to Goomberella. “I see…” “Well, enough about us, what are you up to anyway?” asks Goombella, gesturing towards Keenan. “Well, you see, I read about the Excess Express being haunted by ghosts, so I’m headed out to see if it is or not. I have everything I believe I need.” Goombella suddenly gasps. Her expression is of sheer joy and exhileration. She grabs Goombario and drags him out of ear-shot of the two kids. She lets him go. “Why did you do that, and more importantly, is your mouth clean?” “Well, tell me another way I could have dragged you over here! I have no arms you know!” “That’s beside the point, now what did you want to talk about privately?” Keenan and Goomberella can’t hear a word. “What you think they are talking about?” Keenan asks. “I have no idea. Normally, they only do this when mommy is angry or daddy got into trouble.” Keenan looks down at Goomberella. “I see.” They overhear things like no, but, come on, and forget it. But soon, the two parents are done arguing, and they return. Goombella proudly starts talking. “Hey, kid-“ “Please, call me Keenan.” “Oh, alright. Keenan, what would you say to Goomberella joining your party?” “What are you talking about?” “What she means to say is, would you like to take Goomberella with you?” Goombario says reluctantly. It’s obvious he doesn’t want his daughter to go with Keenan. “Oh! Wow! This is sudden…” Goomberella starts jumping up and down. “Please Mr. Keenan?! Can I go with you?” Goomberella was absolutely adorable, Keenan couldn’t possibly turn her down. “Sure, why not?” “YAAAAAY!” Goomberella screams. It’s obvious she is absolutely exhilarated. “However!” Goombario starts. “You can not go with him unless you take this with you.” He pulls out of a nearby bag an ESi. “Here, take it. It’s an ESi. An E-mail Sender “I” edition. It’ll allow you to stay in touch with wny and everybody you can E-mail and vice versa. So be careful with it. It’s our only one.” Keenan takes it and puts it away into his shell carefully. “Thanks Goombario, but why are you giving us it?” “Heh, isn’t it obvious? I want to stay in touch with my daughter. We have a laptop at home, so if anything happens, we can let you know! But before you can use it, you will need to set up your E-mail on it. Simply go to settings, and-“ “Done!” shouts Goomberella, who has the ESi on the ground in front of her. Keenan seems astonished. “How did you get that out of my-“ “Shouldn’t you guys be getting going now? The train leaves soon. You don’t want to be late!” says Goombella. Keenan’s face turns to shock. “Oh my gosh! Come on Goomberella, we got to go now!” He takes the ESi and puts it away into his shell. He takes off with Goomberella close behind him. Goombario sniffs. “So, you are absolutely sure she will be alright? I mean, how can you possibly tell?” Goombella’s expression is very serious now. “Did you see it, that pendant the kid was wearing? That’s how I am so sure. That necklace will protect them both very well. I’m sure of it.” “But how can you tell that?” “Well you see…”
Meanwhile, back with Keenan…
“So, we get to Rouguport by going through these sewers?” “Yeah,” replies Goomberella. “You know, when mom told me about these ‘sewers’, I thought she meant ‘sewers’, not ‘ancient city’.” Keenan shrugs. “Well, maybe she-“ “What was that?!” she yells suddenly. Keenan jumps from this sudden outburst. “What was what?!” Goomberella motions towards a corner of darkness to their left. They look at each other, then back to the darkness. Keenan decides to check it out. “Wait here.” He tells Goomberella, who nods. Although, it seems that she wanted to see what it was even more than Keenan did. Keenan walks over to the corner of shadows, and looks around the corner of some ruins. It’s pitch black. He backs away slowly and grabs his flashlight from his backpack. He switches it on, and suddenly- “SMOOOOOORRRRRRRG!!!” Keenan jumps back, while Goomberella jumps in startlement. Keenan runs over to Goomberella, and yells “RUN AWAY!!!” They both agree on this plan of action. This is obvious to tell, since they are running for their lives at about mach 6 in the direction of the Petalburg pipe. Once they get there… “Goomberella, any idea what the heck that was?!” Keenan gasps. “No clue…what…so ever…” she pants. Keenan gets an idea right then. He gets to his backpack, and rummages around inside. Goomberella leans in close to see what he’s doing. Suddenly, Keenan stops. “Uh, Goomberella?” “Yes?” “Personal space please…” “Oh…sorry…” She takes a few steps back. Keenan resumes looking through his backpack. After a few minutes… “Ah-ha! Here it is!” He pulls out a book about the size of his own head! It has a blue cover, and the title is “The Tattle Log”. Goomberella seems puzzled. “This book will tell us all about any enemy we come across!” Keenan says happily. He opens it, and starts to flip around the pages. He mumbles odd words shile doing so. “Doopliss, no…Shady Koopa, definitely not…maybe a-no, I don’t think so…” This continues for some time. Then, several long minutes later, he finds it. The outburst of sound startles Goomberella. “Here it is! It says…Smorg. ‘The Smorg. A Smorg is a creature made of many Smorgs. A single Smorg is no problem and has about 2 hp, 1 attack, and 0 defense. But, some times, when a lot gather around each other, they can make an enormous creature called a Smorg. No name difference, but they have changed a lot! When the giant Smorg fights, it has max hp of 60, attack of 5 with all three miasmas, and defense of 1. When almost defeated, the giant Smorg will morph into a different form, with only one miasma. This miasma, however, has an attack of 13 or 15. So, when fighting a giant Smorg, either be prepared, or run!’ That’s what the book says. Wow. Smorg. How creative…” “That’s it? That’s what scared us?” Goomberella asks after seeing the photo in the book of a Smorg. “It’s kinda cute actually…” “SMOOOORRRRRG!!!” Both companions gulp. “Hey, Keenan?” He gulps again. “Y-yeah?” “Maybe we should just run past it or something. We need to get past it anyway, and I don’t think we can fight it either. Just run. Whacha think?” she asks, looking up to him. Keenan sees her face, and gulps. How could he possibly say no to that face? “…Alright. We’ll just book it past it! Let’s go on 3. Agreed Goomberella?” “Agreed. Alright, one-“ “THREE!” Keenan interrupts. They both burst into a fast sprint, and once they reach the are where the Smorg was at, it’s nowhere to be seen. They consider this lucky, and just keep on running. Soon as they are out of sight, the Smorg comes out. It’s a single, solitary, flower-like creature, with fluffy textures. It has two yellow un-blinking eyes, and it’s looking towards the running duo. “Smorg? Smoorrrg? Smororororrrrrg…” It says, while hopping back into the darkness.
Later, at the underground city’s fountain…
Keenan and Goomberella come panting and gasping toward the fountain. They are moving at about 2 feet per hour. They are exhausted. “Keenan…ya think…we…lost it?” Keenan just collapses. “I think…so…” Goomberella collapses next to him. “That’s…good…” They both slip out of consciousness. Before Keenan does, however, he notices them being surrounded by people. He’s too far out to tell what or who they are though. He finally completely blacks out.
When Keenan comes to, he notices first that his atmosphere feels different. He sits up to look around. He sees he is in a white walles room, with the pain peeling off here and there all around the room, one ceiling fan turned on low, a green door, and he hears chatter outside the door. He gets up off the bed he was on, and immediately, the floor creaks loudly. So loud, that the chatter outside the door ceases. Then, Keenan quickly jumps back into the bed, and quickly turns over. He hears the door open, and few seconds later, shut. He doesn’t move and he tries to listen in on their chatter. “But he doesn’t look like them, I don’t think he’s with them.” Says a calm pleasant voice. “Of course he is mate, why else would he come down here?!” says an almost pirate-like gruff voice. “Well, why are we down here my friend? In life, up above, we all met a dead-end.” Said a female voice, almost entrancing with the form of her speech. “Aye, that mey be true mate, but I don’t know about them. That Goomba is alright by me, but that Koopa…” “What about that Koopa? What’s wrong with him? You say you don’t know, but I think you don’t trust him!” said the entrancing voice again. “Shut yer yapper ye witch!” NOW THAT WAS UNCALLED FOR!!!” Keenan jumped, since this was that female voice. “Now now, Merlee, no need to get angry at him. Go to your happy place…” This was a new voice. It sounded a little old, like a grandpa, but also sounded like someone who had some life and adventure experience. “Just remember, we thought the same of Mario’s gang, and look what they did.” “Mario’s gang?” Keenan accidentally says out loud. He quickly stiffens his body and covers his mouth. He waits to hear what happens. The people outside stopped chatting. A few minutes later, they resume. “Anyway, about Mario’s gang, what were you saying about them Proffessor Frankly?” “Frankly? Wow!” Keenan whispers, making sure they wouldn’t be able to hear them. “Because, now that you mention it, those two do look a little bit like some of Mario’s partners…” “Quite right my patched friend, quite right. You don’t think that the Koopa may be the offspring of Koops, do you?” “Nah, don’t think so mate. Plausible, but I don’t think so.” “Are you sure, my patchy fool? He may the son of Koops!” said Prof. Frankly. “I know he MAY be. All I’m saying is that I, personally, don’t think he is.” “Well, either way, my patched fake” starts Merluvlee, “that Koopa boy, I believe-nay!” He’s awake!” “Wait, how do you know this witch?” Merlee growls loudly. “I be no witch, but my spells could make you twitch!” “Wanna bet you witch?! Bring it on!” “STOP YOU TWO! NOW!” That was Frankly again. “Focus you two, why are we here again?” The two groan. The pirate one answers. “We be here to watch over the two who came here. They survived the Smorg, and we have to guard them.” “Good job my cycloptic friend. Now, if he IS awake, then we should welcome him. Don’t you think so?” “That is correct, my dear senior, this is why, you’re our leader.” “Thank you. Now, who’s going to check on him?” Keenan stiffens up again, preparing to fake sleeping. “…………………..” “What? Nobody willing to check on a singly Koopa?” “…………………..” “Fine. I’ll check on him.” Said Frankly. The door oprns after a few seconds, and Keenan hears the sound of a Goomba waddling towards the bed. He can hear his breathing so clearly, it was like he was there right at the back of his neck. Then, he hears the Goomba waddle again, and the door shut. Keenan risks his security, and turns around in the bed. He makes it look like he’s turning in his sleep though. He keeps his eyes completely shut, until a few silent seconds pass by. He chances it, and he opens one eye. “I KNEW you were awake!” Keenan screams in shock. Frankly was still right there next to him. He faked his movement the entire time! “How did you-“ “My dear boy, you learn a thing or two when you adventure out and about to far-away places. Now, my dear boy, how are you feeling?” Keenan sits back up, and rubs his head. “A little dizzy, why?” “Well, why wouldn’t I care about the offspring of Koops, co-hero of the entire world?” “……….” “What, cat got your tounge?” He laughs. Keenan chuckles nervously. “Yeah, ha-ha-ha…” Keenan gets off the bed, and stands up. “So, how long did you know I was awake?” Frankly gets up on the bed and sits. “Well, I’m not so sure about them, but I knew about it ever since you first awoke. You talk a LOT in your sleep, and when you woke up, you stopped jabber jawing. So, I simply assumed, you woke up. Also, it was 100% confirmed when you said ‘Mario’s gang’ out loud.” Keenan can’t help but be in awe at the tiny senior. “Wow, you’re quite intelligent. I mean-well, I knew you were, but this is…wow! My dad told me about you, but this is incredible! What’s your I.Q. huh? 600?! Koops was right!” “So, you are Koops’ offspring. What’s your name anyway?” Keenan flinches slightly when asked this question. “Well, I can’t tell you my real name, but I can tell you my ‘adventuring name’ if you want.” Frankly seems to be stumped. “Uh, ok, sure.” “It’s Keenan. Keenan the Koopa. Oh, and the reason I couldn’t tell you my real name, is for security reasons. In case an enemy heard my real name, knew my father, knew his son’s name, and wanted to kill me or something. It was dad’s idea.” Frankly nods a few times, and says “yes, I see. That does make sense, to hide your identity. Well, if you are on an adventure, then I have a partner recommendation for you. Go to the Glitz Pit. Ask for ‘The Great Gonzales II’. He will be of great help to you. Trust me on this one. But be careful of him, he has a bit of an attitude. He was one of Mario’s partners back then. He hatched with Mario after he started on his adventure.” “Glitz Pit. Great Gonzales II. Got it. Any way, how I can tell who he is?” “Trust me, you’ll know. His ‘tude gives him away. Oh, and take this.” He hands him a Tasty Tonic. “It’s for the dizziness.” “Thanks a lot Mr. Frankly.” “Please, call me Prof.” “Oh yeah, right. Prof. Frankly.” Keenan heads over to the door, preparing to leave, when Frankly says, “By the way, you may want to talk to the people around here to see if they could help you in some way. You never know…” Keenan nods and heads out the door. Almost immediately he is stopped by a purple bob-omb with a patch over one eye and bones for it’s wind-up key. Next to him was a lovely person in green and white and yellow eyes peeking out of her robes. The bob-omb stopped Keenan just as he exited the room he was in with the professor. He said, “hey there matey! How are ye?” “Uh…” is all that Keenan can think to say. The green and white one walks up to Keenan and gets between him and the bob-omb. “Don’t crowd him pa-patch! He just got up, and his breath he needs to catch!” Keenan looks over to the girl, and asks “are you Merlee? The one he called a witch?” while pointing to pa-patch. “Well you would call her a witch too if you knew what she did to people who are unlucky enough to cross her path!” “Why? What does she do?” Keenan asks. “She-“ “That’s not important right now, young Koopa kid. You might want to be checking on your friend. The Goomba gal, the light brown one, she’s in the other room, carrying you two here was none too fun.” Says Merlee. Keenan leans down to pa-patch. And whispers “does she always have to speak in rhymes?” Pa-patch whispers back, “Yes. No one knows why she does, but apparently she needs to. Or so she thinks.” “What was that Pa-patch? I heard you say something…” We all turn around. Frankly came out of the room. “So, Keenan, you going to leave now, or wait around here a little bit, see what’s here? Like I said, stuff people say here may help you out with your adventure!” Keenan nods. “First, where is Goomberella?” Merlee points over to another door. “She’s right through there. The Goomba that is so fair.” Keenan sees another green door, and walks over. He notices the design on the doors just now. They are fancy green doors, with some fancy twisty and spiraling line designs all over them. The doorknobs are a golden brass color, and glint in the dim light. Keenan just noticed! They have a lot of light, but they are still underground, aren’t they? He’s not sure. He looks up, and sees only pitch black. It reminds Keenan of the movie with Vin Diesel “Pitch Black”. Just thinking of those creatures made a shiver go down his spine. He quickly enters the door into Goomberella’s room. “Hey, Goomberella, are you-OH MY GOD! MY EYES! THE HORROR! THE HORROR!!!” Keenan looks away and closes his eyes shut and tight. “Oh shut up. It’s just my facial mask. I need some beauty at least. It’s hard to do that when you are a Goomba.” Surely enough, when Keenan re-opens his eyes, it’s just a facial mask of green goop and cucumbers over her eyes. “Oh, jeez! That almost gave me a heart-attack! You gotta warn a guy about that!” “Just shut up. Why you in here anyway?” she says from underneath her Halloween-er, ‘beauty’ mask. “Well, I’m ready to go around and ask people about some stuff. Frankly said that some people around here tend to accidentally give us some information that’ll help us out on our ‘quest’.” Goomberella nods. “Sounds good. You go do that.” “What, you’re not coming?” “I’d rather not say to you. It’s kinda private, you know?” Keenan nods. “I understand.” Keenan exits the room, and closes the door. Goomberella looks in the direction of the door, and gets up. She rubs her head against the side of the bed she was on to get the cucumbers off. She slowly opens her eyes. She notices her room. It’s the exact same as Keenan’s room. “Huh. The place could use an interior decorator. All peeling white does have an interesting effect, but it gets a little stale after about five seconds.” She leaves the room, just to bump into Merlee. “Well hello there, Goomberella! How are you today little fella?” Goomberella notices Merlee’s clothes. “Uh, I have something to ask you.” “Sure thing, little thing! What is it, fire away. No need to fear, no need to be shy!” “Does she always speak in rhymes?” Goomberella thinks to herself.
Meanwhile, back with Keenan…
“So, there IS a ghost on the train after all?” “That’s what I’ve heard! You need to trust old Wonky! He knows almost everything there is to know! And with that, bam! I’m done! Come see old Wonky again sometime! It’s been boring in here ever since Mario stopped coming.” Keenan is inside a bigger building compared to his room. His and Goomberella’s rooms were entire buildings. Probably houses. He leaves the bar-like building where Wonky was at, and returns to his room. He puts his backpack on the bed, and grabs his bag of coins. Only 65 coins are left. “Man, I need to get more coins, and fast! We are going broke quickly, and that’s not good…” Keenan says to himself, not realizing it was out loud. Frankly comes in, and shuts the door. He waddles over to Keenan, who sits on the bed. Frankly jumps up onto the bed. “I heard about your financial problem, and I have a solution to it.” “Really? How?” “You don’t need that much money, you know.” “So what? We need the money! We only started out with 100 you know!” “So? That’s the exact same amount that Mario started off with 20 years ago. But he got more coins by fighting baddies, as Goombella called them back then. You know, Koopa Troopas, Goombas, anything loyal to Bowser or the X-Nauts, stuff like that. You get coins from enemies. And the tougher the enemy, if you win, then the more coins they give up. The only exceptions were Bonetail and The Shadow Queen. They had no coins to give up. Do you understand what I am saying to you now?” Keenan nods. “Yeah. I think so. Fight off baddies, win coins. Got it.” “Good. Now, come. I’ll lead you to the Excess Express. But first, we need to find Goomberella.” “I thought she was with you!” Frankly looks up to Keenan. “But I though she was with you. This isn’t good. We need to find her asap!” The two quickly get off the bed, burst through the door, and Keenan bumps into a nearby Goomba. “I’m sorry! I can’t seem to run around people for some reason.” He looks up to see a Goomba in Green and white clothing similar to Merlee’s. “Who are you? I don’t remember you around here.” “Keenan, it’s me.” Keenan’s expression is confused. “Wait, how do you know me? I never talked to you down here.” The Goomba groans. “We had to run past a Smorg to get here. Does that help?” “Wait.” Keenan studies the Goomba’s face more carefully. “GOOMBERELLA?!” “Bingo.” Says the Goomba. “Where’d you get the nice digs?” She motions her head towards Merlee, who’s talking with, or rather arguing with, Pa-patch again. “And that’s not all! These clothes came with magic gloves! See?” She shows Keenan the gloves, which are flexing their fingers. Keenan seems not very surprised. “Wow. That’s, cool I guess.” Goomberella scoffs, and shows the gloves are under her control. She shows this by slapping him. Hard. Hard enough to stop the two feuding friends, making them look over. Merlee screams “You’re getting the hang of those gloves! Enjoy having hands! Even if they are fake gloves.” “Ok, NOW I’m impressed! That is COOL!” Keenan says. “But that’s beside the point. We gotta go now bedfore the train leaves! Come on!” Goomberella nods and runs ahead of Keenan towards the fountain. Keenan is close behind. They run past the fountain, and finds Frankly waiting for them. “Ah! There you are! Let’s get going!” Frankly hits a hidden switch behind a nearby boulder, and the top of the fountain became a pipe. Goomberella is speechless. Keenan can’t shut up. “Wow! Cool! Awesome!” Frankly hops up to the top of the fountain, stands on top of the pipe, and yells down “Follow me! The train’s this way!” He heads down the pipe. Keenan and Goomberella soon go in after Frankly.
Later…
The two companions continue up the pipe until they find themselves in a city of brown bricks, lovely gardens, and even a parlor for games and winnings. “This must be Rougeport” says Keenan once they jump out of the fountain the pipe put them in. “Yeah, it fits the description my mommy told me” said Goomberella soon as she caught up with Keenan, who by this time was on his way to the item shop. “Why are you here? I don’t see Frankly anywhere.” Keenan doesn’t seem to hear her. He’s busy talking to a cute Boo the shade of a perfect blue-turquoise wearing an odd outfit and cat ears. She walks over, and listens in. “I’m looking for a specific item, and I was wondering if you had it in stock.” Keenan says to the Boo. “Well it’ll depend on what it is sweetie. What item you looking for?” Keenan leans down and whispers something in her ear. Her face changes to serious. “I’m sorry sweetie, but we don’t carry those anymore. We quit selling those LONG before Mario even came to Rougeport. I’m sorry. But I’ll tell you what, the Glitz Pit shop may still have some. You should try there.” “Alright. Thanks.” “No problem sweetie. Now, anything else you want or need to buy?” “No, no thanks. I’m good.” Keenan turns away and walks right past Goomberella, seeming to not notice her presence. She joins up with him. After they exit the shop, they decide to ask around for directions to either an old Goomba with spirally glasses, or for directions to the Excess Express. They figure out it was directly due north of the jackpot sign. They head over to the train as soon as they find this out.
Later, at the E.E. train…
Keenan and Goomberella find the train and look around for the conductor. Soon enough, they find him. He was checking the train engine outside the main cars. “Hey, are you the guy we need to talk to in order to ride this train?” Keenan asks him. The guy checking the engine doesn’t seem to notice they’re even there. Keenan looks down to Goomberella, who looks back at him. He yells out, “are you the guy to see about riding the train?” Still no response. Keenan grows angry now, and screams at the top of his lungs the same question. This time, the guy turns around, sees them, and turns off his iPod. “Sorry, I was listening to System of a Down. What did you say?” Keenan asks the same question. “Oh yes, I am him. You want to ride? Let me see your pass then.” He says while jumping down off the engine. Keenan holds out his pass, and the man sighs. “I’m sorry, but I cannot allow you to ride today.” Keenan asks why. The man only says “Well, two things. One, the engine needs to be repaired, which may take a day or two, and Two, your pass has expired. You need to buy or obtain a new one somehow.” Keenan scoffs, and groans. “You have got to be kidding me…” “I’m afraid not sir and madame.” Goomberella steps up. “Well, know anyone who DOES have a recent pass?” The man thinks for a bit, and then “Well, there is that Yoshi guy. He calls himself Great Gonzales II or something. You may ask him, I’ve heard he’s a really nice guy. You can find him-“ “At the Glitz Pit. I know.” “Oh! So you’ve heard of him! Well then, the blimp to Glitz Pit is just to your right. Talk to the Cheep Cheep there, and you’ll have to ride the blimp to the Pit. Good luck!” Keenan groans again, and turns to his right. Surely enough, there is a Cheep Cheep right there, wearing an odd hat. Keenan walks over. “You the guy to talk to about riding the blimp?” The Cheep Cheep says that he is, but that they need a pass to ride. “Oh come on!” Keenan yells to the sky. Goomberella just snickers. “What’s so funny?!” “Well, one, your reaction, and two,” she pulls out a blimp pass. “My mommy gave me this before we left!” Keenan starts thanking Goomberella like crazy, takes the pass, and shows it to the Cheep Cheep, who, too, sighs. “I’m sorry, but that pass is outdated.” Keenan’s eyes start twitching. “Repeat that please. Now.” The little fish repeats, and Keenan asks them to excuse him for a few moments. He turns around, goes around the nearby wall back towards the town, and very loud screaming can be heard. Keenan soon afterwards returns, and asks the fish if he is sure. “Yes, I am sure. I’m sure that it was a joke! Hohoho!” Keenan’s face seems to be screaming “I’M GOING TO KILL YOU YOU FRICKING FISH!!!!!” but he only says “Okay. Good. So, this pass is good?” “Yes, it’s perfectly fine. Go on ahead, you may ride the blimp.” The little fishy fish moves towards the side, unblocking the path, and the two move on ahead. There is a pipe not far ahead, and they both sigh. “Not again.” Keenan says out loud. They both jump in, and they come out next to a blimp. They both climb aboard, and immediately, like as if it was loaded with motion sensors, the entire blimp rises into the air. Nice “air’ music starts to play. As the blimp begins to increase in speed, Goomberella notices something. A floating city awaits them. “Keenan! Look! It’s the Glitz Pit! Right there!” Keenan looks down over the side. “Where? I don’t see it anywhere!” Goomberella clears her throat, and motions to her side, in the sky. “Over there, genius.” Keenan seems befuddled, and looks. A floating city is approaching them, quite quickly. A giant chain chomp is used as a sign, and above it, giant letter spell out Glitzville. They finally made it. Glitzville. Home of the Glitz Pit. There little adventure has finally begun.

Chapter 3-Go Go Gonzales!
Soon the blimp touches down onto the platform. Keenan and Goomberella climb out. They take a look around. They notice a hot dog stand, a shop, a juice parlor, and a lot of signs with a big picture of a big Yoshi. The color is fading, so it’s hard to tell the color. But underneath the fading photos, a title reads in giant capital letter Great Gonzales II. The two split up to get more information. Keenan heads over to the item shop first. Goomberella just shakes her head, smiling. She heads over to the juice parlor first. Inside the item shop, Keenan notices a lot of fighting and stat boosting items. He looks around, and sees what he needed back in Rougeport. A Power Punch Mega! He immediately runs over and looks at the price. One PPM costs… “WHAT?! Over 200 coins?! Seriously?!” “I see you are interested in our new item! The PPM is a hot seller, so it’ll be high-priced for sure!” says the shop manager. Keenan has noticed that all shop owners, except in the west side of Rougeport, have been Toad’s. Maybe it’s just a coincidence. “Yes, I am interested, but I only have 65 coins to spend, and I need most of them to save up for my adventure. I am brand new to adventuring, and I am saving up money. Plus, with no bad guys to whoop here, I don’t know how to make more money. I am no businessman, so selling stuff is out of the question.” “I see. Well, you could always sign up to become a fighter here; you’ll make money that way. There’s no backing out once you sign that contract though. So be careful if you do! Plus, Miss Jolene, the manager and owner of the Pit, will allow you to leave temporarily, but if you are challenged as a fighter here, you WILL come back to fight, whether you want to, or not. But, this way, you can make a lot of money. You don’t even have to aim for the top to become champion if you don’t want to either! But, if you did, good luck. Great Gonzales II is the current champion, so if you have to fight him, prepare to go to the hospital. Ever since Great Gonzales left the belt here, Rawk Hawk became champion, and was soon defeated by the Yoshi kid Mario, or the Great Gonzales, had as a partner. That same kid became the new champion!” “Well we need to find that same Gonzales. Any idea where we could find him when he’s not fighting?” “Yeah. Inside the champions room inside the Pit. Only he and Jolene are allowed in though.” “Well thanks for the info. That’ll be good enough.” Keenan leaves the item shop, but before he exits, he looks back at the PPM and sighs.
Back with Goomberella…
Goomberella walks into the juice bar. She notices a cute female toad with hair over one eye. Goomberella decides to ask her first. “Hey, do you know how we can get a hold of GGII?” The toad just brushes her hair over her eye with a quick stroke, and replies “actually, yes. My mom told me about him. He goes to the Great Tree every December 24th to celebrate the Punies’ Christmas celebration. He and his friends from 20 years ago all attend it. It is said that only great heroes may attend this bodacious bash.” Goomberella scoffs. “But it’s only April! How about anytime soon?” She shakes her head. “Nope. I am afraid not. Unless you are a registered fighter at the Glitz Pit of course. Duos, teams of five, solo, it doesn’t matter. If you are registered, then you may bump into him after all.” “Alright, thanks a lot” Goomberella says while turning to leave. She exits the juice bar, but before doing so, she turns around to the toad, and thinks “I wish I was that cute…” The two meet back up below the blimp. They both explain what they have learned to each other. “Okay, so basically, we need to fight to meet up with him. So, let’s go get registered!” Goomberella nods in agreement. They head over to the Glitz Pit and, as soon as they enter, they find themselves lost in a crowd of cheering fans! “Goomberella, stay close to me.” “You don’t have to tell me twice!” They fight their way through the crowd to the stairs to their right. They notice the crowd is lessening in size and volume. Keenan notices a quick movement of jet black go into the main doors to the fighting arena. He wonders what it was. He shrugs it off, and continues up the stairs behind Goomberella. They make it to another pair of double doors. They open them and head inside. The interior of the Glitz Pit is absolutely huge! There are screaming fans everywhere! And, to Keenan’s luck, they are cheering for the Great Gonzales II! He rushes through the cheering crowd, bumping into complete strangers, and gets pushed off the side! He falls down next to the arena! He notices a yellow bird fighting off a black dinosaur-like creature. It resembles the Yoshi kid that his father told him about. It must be Wesley! He calls out his name, but he can’t even hear himself above the screaming crowd. He notices that some of the crowd is chanting “RAWK HAWK” over and over again. He assumes that the yellow bird must be Rawk Hawk. He decides to just watch the fight. The Great Gonzales II is taunting Rawk Hawk. “So, why are you called Rawk Hawk anyway? The one who Rawks everyone he fights? Heh, cuz you sure haven’t rawked me, that’s for sure, you giant chicken!” The bird grows orange in the face. He must be furious. “NO BODY CALLS ME A CHICKEN AND LIVES!!!” “Chicken. Chicken. CHICKEN!” “I told you, nobody calls me a chicken and lives!” Rawk Hawk jumps for the black colored Yoshi, who jumps straight up to dodge, then meteors down with an extremely fast and super strong ground pound! Bam-Bam-Bam-Blam-Bam-Bam! Six hits in a row! That’s going to leave a pretty big mark on his head THAT’S for sure! “…ow…” “I told you, you can’t beat me!” The bell dings. The winner is the black Yoshi. “And the winner is… The Great Gonzales II!” yells out a nearby toad of blonde hair and small glasses that tend to keep slipping down her nose. “Hahahahahahaha! How’d that floor taste?” says the black Yoshi. Eventually, the crowd around the stage gathers around the side of the Yoshi, who jumps off the stage wearing a belt with an orange star on it. He pulls out a pen from his side-pack and starts to give out autographs. Keenan rushes over, but keeps being pulled back and pushed away by the ever growing crowd. Keenan has had it by this point! He goes in his shell which starts to spin. Slow first, but quickly increases in speed. A small hurricane is generated by his speed, and he shoots off still in his shell like a rocket! He used his Power Shell technique he inherited from his father! He plows through the crowd like they were nothing, and continues to go flying! He has lost control! He bounces off the wall, goes flying into the air, and lands right in front of the black Yoshi. Keenan slowly climbs out of his shell, and he faces away from the Yoshi. “That was close! I almost…” He can’t even finish his sentence, because the Yoshi taps his left shoulder. He turns around, and sees an angry looking Yoshi staring at him in the face at eye-level. “And, who, are you?” he asks. “I’m Keenan, and I’ve come to ask you a few things.” The Yoshi sits on the steps that lead up to the arena. “Well? Ask me already!” Keenan walks over and sits next to him on the steps. “First, we need a pass for the train, and second…” “Hold up. You came here, blew away all my fans, making them dizzy by hitting walls, and I thought I saw one go flying up to the ceiling.” Just then, a toad falls down right in front of them. Then a Lakitu falls next to it, cloud and all. “Okay, make that two.” Says the Yoshi. “Anyway, you do all those things, and then expect me to answer a few questions?” Keenan gulps. “Uh…” “Well? Yes or no?!” he yells. “…yes, I do.” The Yoshi sits still unmoving. Then, a few long moments later, “alright. Ask away.” Keenan sighs in relief. “Well, like I said, that train pass, and also, Frankly said-“ “Wait. Professor Frankly? THE Professor Frankly? The one in Rougeport?” “Yeah, that one. He told me that we may need you on our little team or party to go adventuring.” The Yoshi seems to be interested in this particular part. “Well, if I was to be part of your team, then I’ll need some proof that you’re not lying.” “How can I do that?” Keenan says using body language by throwing his arms in front of him. This movement makes his pendant glisten in the dim light. “Wait, that pendant. Where did you get that?” “Oh this old thing?” Keenan asks while holding up his pendant. “I got it from my dad.” Yoshi seems surprised. “Wait, are you, maybe, Koop’s son?” Keenan nods. “Yes I am.” “Then in that case, I’m with ya!” He gets up and holds his hand out to the Koopa. Keenan slowly gathers up enough courage to shake hands with him. His grip is intense! It hurts Keenan to the point of gasping when he first grabs! “Sorry about that man, keep forgetting my own strength.” “Don’t worry about it, I’m a good defense guy.” Keenan says smiling. The Yoshi nods. “By the way, what do I call you? For short I mean. GGII doesn’t have much ring to it.” “Just call me by my name. It’s Wesley.” “Wesley, huh? Okay. I guess that’ll work.” After they shake hands they find Goomberella, who got flattened by the charging crowd from earlier. Keenan picks her up, and asks if she was ok. “I’m fine Freddy, I’m fine.” Keenan gets her on top of his left shoulder and looks at Wesley. “We can take her to the Champion’s room. She can get her strength back there. I have a custom temperature changing bed. That should work well.” Keenan nods, and they head out the west arena door. Wesley takes them to a golden door nearby, and the guard stationed there lets them pass. Inside, the room is filled with training equipment, presents from fans, and other things. Keenan hands Goomberella over to Wesley, who puts her into the bed. He activates the temperature changing panel and sets it to cool. “This should help her recover. She only needs some good rest. She’ll be fine afterwards.” “That’s good.” Says Keenan who is kneeling next to the bed. “I hope she’ll come out of this ok.” Wesley comes over. “Hey man, it’ll be fine. Don’t worry. This bed is the best one in the building. It’ll fully heal her in every single possible way.” Keenan looks up to him. “So no need to worry about her, alright killer?” “Killer? What did you get that from?” Wesley looks back over his shoulder to a painting of him as a kid and Mario at his side. “I got it from your killer instinct and your name. Killer Keenan the Koopa. Your stage name. What do you think?” “Stage name?” “Well yeah. I can’t just leave in my prime you know. I will only leave with you if you can prove your strength to me. Got all that?” Keenan looks over to Goomberella. “I don’t know.” Wesley walks over back to them. “You know, with that trampling she took, just resting here may not be enough. Now, if you became the champion here, you would make more than enough money to buy an Ultra Shroom which guaranteed to fully heal her. Just tell the shop manager here to ‘go take a hike over a blue hill’ and he will know what you want. He has a secret shop in the back. But, only champions can enter it, so knowing the pass phrase isn’t enough. This works for past champions too.” Keenan nods. He now know what he must do. He has to fight his way to the top, confront Wesley, and win to help guarantee Goomberella’s safety and health! He gets up, and leaves the room. He takes a quick left and goes past the grey door to storage, and enters the very next room. A toad in pink and white with glasses is there at a desk. She notices Keenan come in, sees the fierce expression, and smiles. “So, you wanna fight huh? Well, let’s get you registered. Name?” “Keenan.” “Stage name?” He thinks it over. “Killer Keenan.” “Nice. Now, how about your weight class?” “No clue.” “Alright then, starting in the minor leagues. Is that acceptable?” Keenan closes his eyes and thinks. “Yes.” “Good. Then follow me.” She exits the room and takes him to a door on the right side hall. The last door. The minor leagues. “Alright, now to reserve a match, you simply walk over to this panel here, press START and wait for a response. You’ll understand it after that. Understood?” Keenan nods his head. “Good. Then good day Killer.” She leaves the room. Soon, Keenan is surrounded by a green bald rock creature, a blue Koopa, a Goomba, and a bob-omb. The blue Koopa walks right up to Keenan. “Wassup Killer? Ya mind if I call ya K?” “No, go right ahead.” “Alrighty! Now K, this is how it works. You register your match, you fight, you win, and you go up in ranking. But only if you do what your told to do before you win the match. Got it?” “I think so.” “Sweet. Now K, let me introduce you to the gang here.” He motions towards the bob-omb. “This is Bombster. He is part of a group of four. And this guy over here,” he motions towards the rock thing, “is Rocky. He’s part of a group of three. And finally,” he points to the Goomba “this clever little guy is Gandy. He’s a Goomba that’s in a group of five. Two red, and three green. Last but best,” he points to himself. “As for me, I’m King B. Nice to meet ya. I’m part of a group of three. Two of which fly. I’m obviously not one of them.” Keenan nods. “So, you like this here crib?” Keenan looks around. There’s a bed with no sheets, the wall painting is peeling, and there are lockers that are battered and broken. “Not really.” “Well don’t worry. You win enough, then you get to go up to the Major Leagues. None of us have made it that far yet, but maybe you can! But don’t get your hopes up. We say that to all the newbs that join up at the Pit.” “Yeah, but I WILL make it, I WILL make it to the majors, and I WILL defeat the champion!” King B gasps. “You nuts?! No one has defeated GGII yet! Ever since Gonzales left, he has been winning and never losing matches here! He beat Rawk Hawk on his first try solo! Even Gonzales couldn’t do that!” “Gonzales? You mean Mario?” “Yeah. But around here, don’t call him that. Mario’s not a good name to use around here. There was a fighter named that after Gonzales came, used that name, and was the worst playing fighter ever. He won all his matches, but always dirty like. No one liked him, but he became the champ before GGII did, but was shown for what he was by GGII himself! Ever since then, Mario has been a never-to-be-spoken word here. Understand that?” Keenan nods. He is used to Mario. Calling him Gonzales will take some getting used to. “Understood. Call Mario Gonzales when here. Alright.” Just then, Goomberella waddles in. “Hey Keenan, what are you doing here?” Keenan looks over and tells her the whole story. She jumps in excitement but also seems a little nervous. “That’s awesome! Granted a little unnerving, but awesome still!” King B walks over to Goomberella. “And, bra, who are you?” Keenan walks over to King B. “She is my partner. That alright with you?” “Ok, ok. No need to be all protective bro. Not trying to take your girl.” Keenan blushes. “She is not my girl. We are only friends.” “Sure, sure. Right.” He says. Keenan walks over to the screen and hits START. Jolene pops up on the panel. “Well well. You ready to get dirty fighting Killer?” Keenan nods. “Well then, your first opponent will be the Goomba Bros. It’s a team of five Goombas all at once. It’s relatively easy to beat them, that’s why they are your first opponent. They are at the bottom of the rankings! Anyway, I’m sure you know about the special requirements for winning battles here. Well we decided to take those off. They didn’t attract as many people as we thought it would. So get out there and win! That is all.” She disappears off the screen. Keenan and Goomberella decide to wait and soon, a security escort came for them. He tells them to follow him to the ring. Keenan walks out and hears a pssst from behind. He looks back, and King B whispers “good luck bro” to him. He simply nods. He follows the guard and they arrive at the ring. They don’t go inside for several minutes. “Goomberella?” “Yeah Keenan?” “One, you need a stage name, and two, I’m having terrible stage fright here!” “Alright. One, it’s just my name. I’m your partner here, so I don’t need one. And two,” she pulls out a Courage Shell. “Put this on.” Keenan slips into the Courage Shell. “Much better! Thanks Goomberella!” She nods. Keenan opens the ring door, and goes into the blinding light. Once his eyes adjust to the brightness, he notices a full crowd. He starts shaking. He gulps it down, and calmly whispers to himself “you can do this” over and over. He manages to get up on stage, followed closely by Goomberella, and the manager Jolene is there waiting with the Goomba Bros. “Alright. I want a nice clean fight. Got it?” she seemed to be focusing on the Goomba Bros. The one in front nods. Then he turns around to Keenan. “Yo! Koopa kid! Get ready to be pummeled!” Jolene continues. “Alright! Get ready to…” “TAKE THIS!” the same Goomba yells, charging in and bonking Keenan on the head hard. He takes no damage since he is wearing the Courage Shell. The Goomba retreats to his brothers and gasps. “How did you not take any damage?” “I’m a Koopa man, I have a higher defense. That, and I think I’ll defeat you five in a single blow!” Goomberella looks up at him. “How you going to do that?!” The lead Goomba repeats the same query. Keenan laughs. He retreats into his shell, which starts spinning. The vacuum it creates is so strong, that the Goomba Bros. get sucked into the vortex, get spinned around like ragdolls in a wind tunnel, and end up getting hurt by bumping into each other! When Keenan’s shell slows down, the Goombas fall down to the stage and are knocked out. Jolene walks over and lifts Keenan’s hand. “And the winner is… KILLER KEENAN!!!” The crowd screams and some boo. Keenan is milking the moment by raising his hands to the crowd, who go absolutely nuts! Goomberella walks over and grabs Keenan with one of her “hands” she has. “Come on, we need to go now Killer!” She ends up dragging him back to the locker room, where later they are visited by Jolene. “Here is your fight money” she says. She hands him 10 coins! “Whoa! That much for just the first match?” “Well sure. We are making a lot of extra money ever since we joined up with the juice bar, hot dog stand, and the item shop. We get about 25 % of what they make, and we help them get more customers. It’s a good deal for all of us.” “Ah” is all Keenan could say. “Either way, you may reserve your next match on that screen there, as you know. It’s just protocol for me to tell that to all new fighters for their 20th and 19th ranks. So, if you go up one more, then I won’t have to tell you that anymore. Good day Killer” she says while exiting the door. King B comes up to Keenan, and says “that was a pretty good match there K! You’re a natural! But I gotta know man, how did you do that thing with your shell?” Keenan shrugs. “Honestly, I was trying to do something different. I meant to Power Shell ‘em. I’m still new to the special attacks and stuff.” King B nods. “I can understand that dude. Anyway, if you keep going at this rate, you’ll have to brawl with me soon. So no mercy, alright? That’s for both sides!” Keenan nods. “I kinda figured that since we’re both in the same locker room. Now if you don’t mind…” Keenan walks over to the screen again, and presses START. Jolene comes up again. “Well hello again Killer! Wanting to fight eh? Alright. You’re next opponent will be the Krazy Koopas. Get ready, these boys have a kinda high defense!” Keenan laughs deliberately. “Bring em on! I can take em!” he says with a smile. Goomberella simply shakes her head. “Good! That’s the kind of fighting spirit I like! It reminds me of Gonzales…” she seems to daydream. Keenan taps the screen. “What? Oh, right. Anyway, your next match has been reserved. Just wait for your escort.” The panel switches off. Goomberella looks up at Keenan. “Getting a little bit cocky, aren’t ya?” “Relax Goomberella, as long as I have this strength, we might as well be unbeatable! Besides, I have looked up everyone here, and we can take em easily! But, Rawk Hawk and the Iron Adonis Twins are our main problems. But our highest threat, though, is the Koopinator in power. He is strong, has pretty good stamina, and a higher defense than me. Luckily, he is ranked 2. The others are ranked 10 or lower.” “I see” Goomberella says. Right then, a guard comes in the door. “King B, your group is needed in the arena now.” King B walks up and nods. The guard escorts him out. Then, another guard comes in and asks for Killer Keenan. They head out and into the arena. Sure enough, they are fighting each other. Keenan shudders slightly. Goomberella behind him tells him that even though they’re fighting a friend, they shouldn’t give in! Keenan swallowed down his fear, agreed with Goomberella, and faced his opponents. King B walks up to the front of his team. “I told you K, no mercy! No matter what!” He sounds a yell and gets his team fired up. Keenan looks at Goomberella who says “we can do this! We just have to try!” Keenan nods. The gong sounds seconds later. King B dashes in for an immediate attack, but Keenan goes into his shell to dodge any damage! He starts to spin, and Goomberella takes the front lines! Keenan, still spinning, says for her to move out of the way, and she jumps over to the left, just as Keenan shoots out like a rocket! He hits the two Koopas on the ground, and they go dizzy! He confused them slightly with a Dizzy Shell! He returns to his side of the arena, and pops out of his shell. “Take that mofo’s” he yells. One of the dizzy blue Koopas got into his shell, shot towards Keenan, and missed completely! He went flying off the stage and hit the wall, which sent him flying back into one of his own teammates that was already on the ground! This hit knocked him over, and when the other one popped out of his shell, he toppled over as well! Keenan snickered. “This fight is in the bag” he cockily says. But then, the Paratroopa flew over and hit Keenan hard on the noggin! “This fight ain’t over yet boy! You still have to defeat us! Just ‘cause you got lucky and didn’t get hit by them, doesn’t mean I can’t hit ya!” Goomberella runs over, head bonks the guy twice, and he falls to the ground and gets tipped over. “…lucky…” is all he can say. Goomberella giggles to herself. Keenan goes into his shell, spins around, and shoots like a rocket toward the first Koopa on the ground, hits dead-center, and defeats the guy. He returns to his side of the stage, gives a thumbs-up to the crowd who starts screaming “KILLER KILLER KILLER” as a mantra. Keenan can’t decide whether to be flattered, or to just save to the crowd again! Then, one of the dizzy Koopas get up, shake it off, and shoots off toward Keenan, hitting him hard! Keenan gets knocked into the real world, literally, by this attack! The only blue Koopa left standing is King B himself. “I like the way you fight K, now get ready for me! NO MERCY!” he yells. He hides inside his shell, spins around, and hits Keenan again. Keenan felt this one quite well! He even stumbled a bit from the hit! “Come on Goomberella, we can take just one Koopa easily! Can’t we?” Goomberella nods. “If we work together, we can take this guy down. Alright, I’ve got a plan. Here’s how it goes…” she begins to whisper. King B looks at Keenan, tilts his head, and when the two stop whispering, he asks “what? Ya had to ask your girlfriend for advice on how to get beat?” Goomberella screams like a crazed maniac, charging in kamikaze like toward the blue Koopa, and jumps over him. Then she charges in toward his tail. This really hurt him, and he hides in his shell. “Can’t get me now eh girly? Ha ha ha!” He continues laughing maniacally. Then, the bonking suddenly stops. King B waits for another bonk, which never comes. He slowly peeks out of his shell, and sees Goomberella panting in front of him. He sees this as an opportunity. He pops out of his shell, and starts to dramatically walk up to Goomberella, slowly, like a villain about to deal the final blow in a movie. Then, he feels something. Not physically though. “…What is this sensation I’m feeling? My head hurts. Not bad, but…” his eyes begin to bulge. “THE PAIN! WHAT THE HELL IS HAPPENING TO ME!?” Keenan is on the other side of the stage, eyes seemingly staring deep into King B’s soul, and he doesn’t seem like himself anymore. King B looks back into his eyes. He screams in terror. The crowd has hushed completely now, and all are staring at Keenan. Some are murmuring about some different things like “what’s happening” or “what’s going on?” Then, King B screams louder. “STOP THIS PLEASE!!! I GIVE! I GIVE! UNCLE UNCLE UNCLE!!!” King B is writhing in pain, and suddenly, Keenan starts to move toward him. King B writhes in even stronger pain. Then, Keenan just collapses. He passed out completely. King B stops screaming, gets up, and runs over to Keenan. Before Keenan fully faints, he notices King B standing…wait, no, not standing, but kneeling next to him. King B is kneeling next to him, asking if he was alright. Keenan faints then and there.
Later, back in the Minor League locker room…
We notice that Keenan is sleeping on a bed in the M.L. locker room. Goomberella and the other Minor Leaguers are talking about the last match. We listen in. “And then, I noticed that his eyes seemed to be…I don’t know, maybe, emotionless or something? No, not that, but they were different somehow.” Says a nearby Lakitu. He’s with the press at Glitzville with live coverage of the matches. “I first noticed this through my camera. But, when I looked at him myself, there was a huge difference. Watch this.” He pulls out his camera. He turns on the last recorded footage. It shows Goomberella panting with King B about to defeat her, and then he stops. He starts feeling the pain. “Now keep watching the other side.” The camera zooms out to show the whole stage, and on the other side of the stage, it shows Keenan, standing still, on his side of the stage. On the camera, however, Keenan was surrounded by an aura of some kind. “I don’t know what to call this,” says the camera man Lakitu, “except it reminds me of some movie I watched one time. Had something to do with parasols and zombies I think…” The others look at him with expressions that seem to say “what is he talking about?” The Lakitu shakes his head. “Anyway, this kid has some great potential. Both fighting wise, and militaristic capabilities! This kid could end up being a one-man army if word of this ever got out! Just be happy that I wasn’t broadcasting live.” The others seem to be very interested in the rest of the video. Just then, the champion walks into the room. “What’s this I hear about a psychic in our midst?” He walks up to the camera man and watches the rest of the video of Keenan’s match. “Whoa. I never knew this kid had this kind of power. Sure I knew he had a lot of power, but not this kind!” Keenan stirs in his sleep. The champion continues but softer. “So, any idea what we should do now?” The camera man continues. “Well, as I was about to say Mr. Gonzales II, was that the Military will be interested in this kid, but only if we allow them to find out! They may do awful experiments on him or something.” Wesley pipes back up. “Well then, let’s not tell them. I say we let the kid continue to fight and see what happens. If it gets too out of control, then we do something to stop him or put him down. Or if he seems to be able to control it, or if it doesn’t happen again, then we don’t have to do anything about it. Is this agreed?” Goomberella and the others nod. But she asks “by put him down, do you mean?” She makes a slit across the throat gesture with her new hands. She rather likes these magical gloves! “No, I meant by us putting him to sleep or tranquilize or something. That’s what I meant.” Goomberella nods in understanding. “Now, if anyone else has some objections?” “Yeah I have one.” Everyone looks over and sees Keenan just woke up. “I have an objection. What on earth are you guys talking about?” Everyone is speechless. Then, “We were talking about whether or not to keep you fighting. You pummeled the last team so badly, we had to have a little meeting about it. We decided to keep you in. That alright with you?” Keenan, still drowsy, nods in agreement. “Yeah. I agree. I need the money, I need you on my team, and I definitely need the publicity.” “Keenan, you don’t NEED the publicity. You WANT it.” Goomberella says. Keenan does a whatever hand gesture, and returns to bed. “Well, if I’m going to keep fighting, then I need to rest up.” He lays down. Goomberella returns to talking to Wesley. “By the way, why did you tell him about me and what happened by that bed?” Wesley runs to the door and says before leaving “I just remembered. I have a match reserved. Bye!” He shuts the door and they can hear him running down the hall. The Lakitu moves towards Goomberella. “He doesn’t have a match reserved you know.” Goomberella nods. “Yeah, I know. I know.”
Later…
Keenan wakes up, yawns, and stretches his arms out. He is greeted by a peppy Goomberella. “Good morning sleepy head! How was your night?” She gets him some toast she made. She brought with them her portable kitchen. It runs on solar power, makes all kinds of meals, and even snacks with items and ingredients you can find anywhere. “Thanks a lot for the toast Goomberella. Thanks a-“ he stoops downward. He is grabbing at his head. “Ow! My head! What happened yesterday? All I remember is fighting off King B, then nothing! What happened to me Goomberella?” Goomberella seems to be ignoring him. But in reality, she is hiding her face behind her back which is facing Keenan, and she is making eggs and toast. “Goomberella, are you listening to me?” Again, she tries to ignore him. Then King B comes over. “Good morning Goomberella! Good morning, Killer.” The way he said Killer made it seem like he was afraid of him. Keenan gets up and walks over to him. “What happened yesterday? I remember fighting you, then Goomberella charged in maniacally as according to our plan, but then nothing. I remember feeling an odd sensation after the blank out, but before waking up. I don’t know what happened, so I was hoping maybe you could tell me.” King B looks around trying to find something as a scapegoat to not have to answer. “Um… well… ah Bombster! How was your match!” A bob-omb walks in. He walks over to King B. “Well, not too good. My whole group were hit first, and they exploded when they attacked. My opponent was still standing even after I bombed him! He was still standing! Darn you Iron Adonis Twins, curse you…” He starts to mumble and rant while walking off. King B turns to Keenan. “And to think, you have to fight them soon. You’re shooting up through the ranks, and soon you’ll have to take them on. You beat them, you move up to the Majors. Good luck!” King B quickly runs out the door. Keenan tilts his head in puzzlement. “That was… odd.” Keenan later walks over to the screen and brings up the rankings. It says that he and Goomberella are currently placing 18 out of 20 minus the champion. “Man, we have a lot of work to do!” he says to Goomberella, who nods. As days pass by, so do Keenan’s wins. That odd power he used against King B hasn’t happened again, and soon, he makes it to the Iron Adonis Twins. “Alright Goomberella, this is it. We beat these two, we move on to the Majors! Let’s do it!” Goomberella nods. She seems worried. “Hey, what’s wrong?” She looks up to Keenan. “It’s nothing, nothing at all. Let’s go kick some iron butt!” She storms out the door. Keenan shrugs and follows.
Outside, in the arena…
“Ladies and gentlemen! Today, we have a special match for you!” The speaker is Jolene. “Today, we have our rising star, The Killer Koopa, Keenan!” As Keenan enters the door and walks up to the stage, the entire crowd on his side of the stage starts chanting his name. “KILLER KILLER KILLER” as a mantra. That’s good, Keenan thinks to himself, especially since that odd day, they haven’t cheered for me this way. Once he gets up on stage, Jolene continues the introductions. “And his opponent, current border holders, The Iron Adonis Twins themselves!” From the other side of the arena, two enormous blue spiked clefts come in. The crowd on that side starts cheering out their stage name in a mantra as well. It seems like the fight is evenly matched with the crowd. Once they reach the arena, Jolene raises her left arm. “GET READY TO…” she throws her arm down hard and fast, screaming “BRAAAAWWL!!!” The gong sounds. Keenan has a serious look on his face, and faces the Twins. “Come on! We can take ya! We haven’t had one loss yet, and we certainly won’t start with you two!” The Twins laugh. The one in front, wearing red shoes, “Puh-leez! You can’t defeat us you miniature freak of nature!” The green shoe wearing one starts where the red one stopped. “Just cuz you can do stuff to King B with your mind, doesn’t mean it’ll affect us!” Keenan, surprised at this, goes “What are you talking about?” “Don’t play dumb you moron, you have mind powers, and we all know it, so stop the charade!” “But-“ Keenan starts, but then the gong sounds.
END OF CHAPTER
I'd like some comments about it so far.

I like it. Unlike the other fics, I can't tell for the life of me what is going to happen next. Rating so far: 8.5/10 just as good at the others!

Thanks man! Expect the next one to be up sometime next week. You may have to PM me so I remember though....
You see, I really can only do this at school, but type it at home and school, so it's a bit complicated...
